Virtual Exhibition on Strashun Library at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania
In March 2018, an online exhibition on the Strashun Library was launched by the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, featuring items that are being digitized for the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Collections project in partnership with YIVO.
The History and Future of the Strashun Library
On January 22, 2017 an international conference on the Strashun Library was held at YIVO in New York.
Scholars Brad Sabin Hill, David Fishman, Zachary Baker, Frida Shor, and Jeffrey Veidlinger discussed:
- The exceptional historical importance of Matityahu Strashun’s private library
- The Strashun library as a “Jewish Public Library"
- Jewish public culture in the Russian Empire
- The Strashun Library’s survival during WWII
- The Strashun Collection at YIVO
Lyudmila Sholokhova and Roberta Newman from YIVO and Lara Lempert from the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania discussed YIVO’s landmark efforts to steward the Strashun library into the 21st century and beyond.
Strashun Library Exhibition at Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania
On May 22, 2017 an exhibition entitled "The People and Books of the Strashun Library" opened at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania to accompany the opening of the library's new Judaica Research Center, named after Khaykl Lunski, the legendary librarian of the Strashun Library.
Strashun Library added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Registry
On June 5, 2017, the remnants of the Strashun library collection in Vilnius were added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Registry in a ceremony at the State Cultural Reserve of Kernavė in Lithuania.
UNESCO’s Memory of the World Registry recognizes specific documents, manuscripts, oral traditions, audio-visual materials, library, and archival holdings as constituting part of the irreplaceable documentary heritage of the world, worthy of significant effort to protect and preserve.
